So I went with my sister to Iceland this year for her birthday (her request was to see something amazing and eat something amazing – and we pulled it off!). This is one in a series of photo galleries from this trip.
First up is a trip INTO the heart (magma) chamber of a dormant – not dead – volcano (the Thrihnukagigur volcano, to be specific) … after a 3km hike in, that is. This is a very unique site in the world, as it’s the only known volcano with an intact, but empty, magma chamber. Most magma chambers like this collapse after a volcano erupts, which is what leads to those well-known crater style layouts. This one, for some unknown reason, drained and left the chamber intact… so incredibly amazing!
Also of interest – during the hike out, there’s a small bridge going over a ravine – which marks the divide between the European and North American continental plates! So while straddling a mid-point on the bridge, you are in two places at once, and on two CONTINENTS at one time!
